Wellness/Fitness Program

“We are pleased to report over 60% of our residents participate in some form of Fitness Program at Wesley Willows!”  -- Bill Pratt, President & CEO.

Encouraging a physically active lifestyle for all residents is the core of the Wesley Willows Wellness Program.  Functional fitness, the ability to do the things necessary to function in daily life and the benefits that come from an active lifestyle are stressed.  The Wellness Program includes several components, a Fitness Center, a personal trainer, exercise classes, educational presentations and active outings.

The centerpiece of the Wellness Program is the Fitness Center.  Located in a bright room, the Center includes four pieces of cardiovascular equipment, exercise bikes, treadmill and a Nu-Step which is a recumbent stepper. There are also five pieces of Keiser strength training equipment.  All the equipment was chosen to provide the maximum benefits to keep participants as healthy and independent as possible.

With the participant’s safety in mind, a physician’s approval is required for participation.  An individualized exercise program is written for each individual and geared to their needs.  Staffed with certified personnel forty hours each week, the Center is available for use at any time with an emergency call system available for use when exercising alone.

Group exercise classes are offered six days per week.  Strength training classes using free weights are offered three times per week.  It is common to find forty to forty-five individuals participating in these classes.  Sit and be Fit classes are offered five days per week for those who prefer a lower intensity workout.  Aerobics classes that include some modified kickboxing are offered for those who enjoy a higher intensity.  Classes for body balance that incorporate stretching and Tai Chi are offered.  Once a week a group travels to the YMCA for a water aerobics class that is gentle on the joints.

Each May, Wesley Willows participates in National Senior Health and Fitness Day.  It is a fun packed day that includes a health fair, speakers on a variety of wellness topics, and varied activities that stress fitness and an active lifestyle.

Participants in the Wellness Program also go out in the community for outings that stress activity and fitness; two of these outings feature walking programs at local malls and recreation paths.

The benefits to participants have been amazing.  Participants report that they have increased their strength and mobility along with an increased sense of well-being.  For more information or to tour the Fitness Center, call Sarah Provenzano, (815)316-1595
