Wellness/Fitness Program

Exercise Guidelines

  1. Always check with your physician before starting any new exercise program and obtain medical clearance.
  2. Plan to exercise 3-5 days per week for 30 minutes a session, more as tolerated.  Exercise can be broken down into several shorter segments.
  3. Set aside a regular time to exercise.  Choose a time that works for you.
  4. Begin your exercise with some gentle warm up exercises and end with gentle stretching.
  5. Drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise.
  6. Avoid heavy meals for about 2 hours before vigorous exercise.
  7. Wear comfortable clothes and safe, comfortable shoes.
  8. Set achievable goals for yourself.  Don’t ask yourself to do too much,
  9. Work a comfortable intensity level.  You should be able to carry on a conversation while exercising.  If not, cut back on the intensity.
  10. Don’t exercise when you are injured, sick, or running a fever.
  11. Stop exercise and consult your physician immediately if you experience any of the following:
    • Chest pain, pain down your arm or heaviness in chest
    • Persistent palpitation or uneven heartbeat
    • Extreme breathlessness with light to moderate activity
    • Inability to catch your breath
